An icon in mens sportswear, the polo shirt was invented in 1930’s by the French 7-time Grand Slam tennis champion, René Lacoste. In the nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, male tennis players usually wore long-sleeved shirts, trousers, and ties. This mens sportswear attire was cumbersome and uncomfortable to wear on the hot courts. Lacoste started his own clothing line named after himself. He designed a loosely knit pique cotton shirt with an un-starched, flat protruding collar with a longer shirt-tail in back than the front of the shirt. His original design also called for a particularly thick pique collar that would be worn upturned in order to block the sun from the neck. When polo players became aware of Lacoste’s invention in the 1930s, they quickly adopted this mens sportswear tennis shirt and people began to refer to the style as a polo shirt. The term "polo shirt" was so universal that by the 1950’s it was commonly used in the U.S. to describe the shirt most commonly associated with formal tennis attire.
